Health insurance deadline fast approaching

By Staff | Jan 13, 2016

The law of the land requires everyone to have health insurance. If you haven’t signed up through the government’s Health Insurance Marketplace, you still have time, but two important deadlines are fast approaching.

Jan. 15, this Friday, consumers must select a plan and pay the premium the same date. This will provide health coverage by Feb. 1.

For coverage effective March 1, the plan and premium must be finalized by Jan. 31.

For help and avoiding paying a penalty, Lehigh Regional Medical Center at 1500 Lee Blvd. in Lehigh Acres is offering free application help.

“Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment is from Nov. 1, 2015 to Jan. 31, 2016 and for free assistance with applying or re-enrolling call 239-368-4407. Premium Paid Coverage begins.

Diann Cimrig, LRMC’s marketing director, says the hospital continues to offer free application assistance to help individuals evaluate insurance options on the Marketplace and complete their application forms.

“However, the hospital’s certified helpers are encouraging those needing help to call immediately to reserve appointments before the end of the week. Call 368-4407 to make an appointment,” Cimrig said.

She said in a news release that increased penalties for 2016 are driving many newcomers to the Marketplace, as most individuals must choose between purchasing insurance and/or paying a fine.

Those without insurance should take note. Fines are $695 per adult, $347.50 per child, and up to $2,085 per family or 2.5 percent of family income, whichever is higher. Cimrig said the fines will be assessed when 2016 federal tax returns are filed. That deadline is April 15.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) points out that the great majority of consumers purchasing plans on the Marketplace are qualifying for financial assistance; this reduces their premium cost, which is the monthly fee charged for coverage. Most are expected to pay less than $75 a month.

The law states that all health plans on the Marketplace must offer a comprehensive set of benefits, and coverage cannot be denied for individuals with a pre-existing health condition. Some of the mandatory health benefits include free preventive care and wellness services, doctor visits, prescription drugs, hospital and emergency department care, lab services and pediatric services.
