PHOTO SPECIAL TO THE CITIZEN Dr. Arnhilda Badia, left, of the Jose Marti Foundation, presents School Board Member Jeanne Dozier with Seal of Biliteracy Leadership Award.
Board adopts biliteracy recognition program
The Lee County School Board has unanimously approved an initiative, proposed by Board Member Jeanne Dozier, to adopt a district Seal of Biliteracy.
It is an award granted to seniors who attain a high level of competency in one or more world languages, in addition to English.
The district’s rationale for offering the Seal of Biliteracy is based on the following purposes:
– To encourage students to study world languages and acquire biliteracy skills that will prepare them for their college and career
– To prepare students with 21st century skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global society
– To strengthen intergroup relationships and honor the multiple cultures and languages in the community
The Seal of Biliteracy will be awarded for the first time this year to graduating seniors.

The Publishers Showcase Event will be held on Jan. 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Caloosahatchee Room at the Lee County Public Education Center, at 2855 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers.
