United Way to provide free tax preparation again
During last year’s tax season, residents of Lehigh Acres received a much as a million dollars back in refunds when they used the United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program at Lehigh Community Services, at 201 Plaza Drive.
“That was really a wonderful thing and the United Way is planning the program again this year. I am hoping the volunteers who will be helping people with their tax returns will be able to find even more refunds for our residents. Those refunds often pump more money into our local economy,” said Rae Nicely, the executive director of Lehigh Community Services.
LCS is the home for the United Way in Lehigh. The tax preparation is provided by IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance volunteers, who are at several countywide sites including Lehigh.
Nicely urges those who are eligible for the free service to waste no time and make reservations now to have your taxes done for you by the professionals.
“It’s a great program and already we are accumulating a list of people who have made reservations to come to the office here and have their taxes done,” she said.
The deadline for tax filing is April 15. The program starts Jan. 23.
You are eligible for the free tax preparation filing if you earned $60,000 or less in 2015. You may be eligible for up to $6,269 in the Earned Income Tax Credit.
Mary Meador is one of the volunteers helping people file their taxes.
“She really loves to help people prepare their tax returns. She’s a wonderful person,” Nicely said. “She has a staff of tax preparers who help her every year through the United Way.”
Nicely noted that there may be a couple more people who may be on hand to receive the free help.
“But you have to call and make reservations,” Nicely said. “You can come in on Saturdays, too.”
