Man turns self in after toddler shooting
Trevon Armstrong
Three weeks after an accidental shooting involving a toddler, a Lehigh Acres man turned himself in to authorities on the night of Jan. 18.
Trevon Armstrong, 22, of 554 Alabama Road, reported to the Lee County Jail and faces charges of culpable negligence and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Armstrong and his sister and her two-year-old daughter all lived at the same home at 554 Alabama Road in Lehigh.
Back on Oct. 19 of 2015 at around 5 p.m., the young girl and her mother were in Armstrong’s room.
When the mother left the room to charge her I-Pad she said she heard a loud popping sound. She said the sound occurred around 20 seconds after leaving the room.
Investigators said the mother came back to the room and saw what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the toddler’s stomach and noticed a black semi-automatic pistol fall from the bed.
The young child was rushed to the hospital and survived her injuries.
Detectives began an investigation and determined that the gun belonged to Armstrong and that he had left the firearm in an unsafe and easily accessible place and by doing so, showed complete disregard for the safety of his niece.
Armstrong was forbidden from possessing a firearm due to a previous felony conviction, according to officials.
Investigators said his rap sheet is scattered with drug and weapons possession charges.
