LCSO staff finish specialized training
Thirty-one members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Bureau recently completed Crisis Intervention Team Training at the Lee County Jail Core Facility.
Hosted by NAMI of Lee, Charlotte and Hendry Counties, it is a 26-hour specialized course designed to improve the outcome of law enforcement interactions with people living with mental illness, substance abuse disorders and other cognitive disabilities such as Alzheimer’s disease and autism.
CIT-trained officers learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of the disorders to assess those in distress and practice techniques for de-escalating a crisis situation.
NAMI LCH will hold additional correctional classes in March and September, as well as 40-hour CIT classes for law enforcement deputies in June and July.
Job fair scheduled
The Home Care Association of America will hold a job fair on Feb. 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Nova Southeastern University, at 3650 Colonial Court, Fort Myers.
Six members of the association will be on hand. The home health agencies currently employ approximately 1,500 part-time employees and hire an average of 30-45 employees every week.
Many of the open positions require no previous experience in health care and the flexible hours are ideal for stay-at-home parents, retirees, veterans and students.
The agencies will also be hiring home health aides and certified nurse assistants.
Sign on bonuses will be available for some positions, and attendees will be entered in a raffle for door prizes.
Attendees also will be offered free Continuing Education Units for participating in two educational seminars being provided – “Caregiving Wages: 1099 or W-2” and “Professionalism and Ethics in the Workplace.” Each is 30 minutes long.

CarFit program earns national recognition
For the second year, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office has been nationally recognized by AARP and AAA for its outstanding performance in CarFit.
The national numbers for 2015 were recently released, ranking the LCSO No. 4 for the number of CarFit events held and No. 3 for the number of participants.
CarFit is a national program deigned to give a quick comprehensive check on how well a senior driver and their vehicle work together while providing tools to understand and apply the safety features of their vehicles.
Motorists also receive community traffic resources and information about available adaptive devices that can assist drivers who have mild to moderate physical limitations.
Upcoming events include:
– Feb. 10: 10 to 11:30 a.m. at AAA, at 2516 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers
– March 2: 10 to 11:30 a.m. at AAA, at 2516 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers
– March 22: 9 a.m. to noon at Germain Arena, at 11000 Everblades Parkway, Estero
– April 13: 10 to 11:30 a.m. at AAA, at 2516 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers
The events are free and no appointment is required; however, you can reserve a time.

Party affiliation deadline
Voters have to choose to register as a Republican or Democrat to vote for their candidate in the Florida Presidential Preference Primary on March 15.
Florida is a closed primary state; only voters who are registered members of the respective political party can vote for those candidate nominees in a primary election.
You may not vote for a candidate in another party affiliation other than your own in a primary election.
A change of party affiliation must be made on a Florida voter registration application; access an application on the website:?www.lee.vote, under the “Voters” tab.
The Florida voter registration application must be received by a Lee County Supervisor of Elections offices no later than 5 p.m. Feb. 16 or postmarked Feb. 16.
