School employee recognized as 2016 ‘Support Person of the Year’

Migdalia “Dali” Cruz, of Harns Marsh Elementary School, got the surprise of her life with an unscheduled visit and an announcement that she had been named the 2016 School District or Lee County Education Support Person of the Year.

The surprise visit, announcement and recognition of Cruz was made on Jan. 26 at about 10 a.m.

“Dali” is what her friends call her, and friends say “serve” is the perfect word for this woman as she selflessly gives of her time and talents to all stakeholder of the school.

She has gained the respect of parents, students, teachers and community members, according to school and education officials.

They say it seems hard to believe, but in a school of more than a thousand students, Dali knows all of the families. The announcement noted that her positive and friendly attitude builds relationships with parents.

As the school district’s education support person of the year, she works every morning greeting parents and students during parent drop-off as she safely escorts them across the traffic.

Friends say Dali is in the business of helping others and recently working with community partners and the Lexington Country Club to provide 100 baskets of food for needy families over the recent holidays. They said to make this happen, Cruz had to order food, receive and sort the food out, and then pack it for each family.

Friends say she stayed late nights to make sure families received their baskets.

And for the few families that had no way of getting their food, she made house calls and delivered the food herself.

When community sponsors asked if there were families in need during the holidays, Cruz went into overdrive shopping herself for toys, clothes, shoes and everyday toiletry needs.

Her reputation throughout the school district has earned her the admiration of many colleagues and often they come to her for advice, according to a joint announcement made by the school district and school.

Friends say she manages parent volunteerism, student volunteers and community mentors at Harns Marsh Elementary School.

Also, she helps parents learning English by organizing and coordinating the program during and after school hours.

And if the volunteer who teaches English is unable to show up, Dali will instruct the class herself, friend say.

During the surprise announcement last week, officials said that Dali truly has the heart of a servant and leads by example. They said she is very effective at recruiting and delegating diplomatically.

Harns Marsh School principal Tracey Zenoniani said that sometimes it seems as if she knows everyone in the district.

“Even with all the issues that can arrive daily during a school day, Harns Marsh can always count on Dali to ensure the job gets done and done correctly,” she said.
