Search to begin for new fire chief for Lehigh

By Staff | Feb 17, 2016

A search committee plus advertising for a new Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District fire chief could begin Friday when commissioners hold a workshop, which begins at 5 p.m. at Station 104, at 3102 S.W. 16th St.

While commissioners may not take legal action to start a search group to replace the chief, it can prepare language for passage at the March meeting.

Regular monthly meetings are usually held on the last Tuesday of the month; workshops can be called at any time.

The workshop had originally been planned at last month’s regular scheduled meeting to discuss the handbook used by the board of commissioners, and to discuss how and when Fire Chief John Wayne would face an evaluation for his job.

At the end of the meeting, Wayne announced that he was not going to seek re-appointment as chief when his contract expires later this year.

The board cannot make decisions at the workshop nor take official votes, but it can discuss business and listen to those in public if they want to make comments before the commissioners.

Heading up the workshop will be the new chairman, Commissioner Cathy Kruse, who replaced Larry Becker when the board reorganized for 2016. The other commissioners are David Adams, Larry Becker, Linda Carter and Matt Smith.

They will be discussing possible changes and additions to their handbook with the advice of board attorney Richard Pringle.

The board may also start the selection process to replace Wayne.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be during the last week of April.

All meetings are public.

Pringle said that if a person decides to bring any type of legal action that is related to any matter discussed at the work, he or she will need a record of the proceedings and he or she may need to verbatim record of the meeting is made.

Wayne became head of the department a few years ago.

His term involved the set up of a special assessment fee to fund the department, which Lehigh?Acres voters approved in an election.
