Officials: Know who you invite to speak to your group

By Staff | Feb 24, 2016

If any Lee County homeowners associations or mobile home communities receive a cold call from a group stating they are working with or are a part of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office or the Florida Crime Prevention Association, know we do not have any affiliation with the group and do not support their unsavory business tactics.

When choosing a guest to speak to your community organization, club or group we suggest you follow these tips:

– Beware of individuals who claim to be crime prevention consultants or experts to arrange a “free” crime prevention seminar. Although there may not be a fee required for their service, they may use scare tactics to motivate attendees to purchase their supplies, such as pepper spray, security systems and such.

– Research the business online. Check and double check the company to make sure there are no scam or lawsuit reviews. Sometimes these individuals may even have a criminal record.

– What credentials does the speaker have? Do they have the proper training?

– Contact the Better Business Bureau about a company before you do business with them. The BBB documents complaints and scams which have been registered by unhappy consumers.

– If you are not sure how or where to check on the legitimacy of a business or you want to report activity you think might be deceptive, call the LCSO fraud line at (239) 258-3292.

If you would like to schedule a crime prevention program for your group, call the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit at (239)?258-3280 for a free and local qualified speaker.
