Fire board awards annual honor

Christopher Torres was named Firefighter of the Year by Fire Chief John Wayne last week at the meeting for the Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue District.
The award is made on behalf of nominations by his peers.
“This is an annual event at the beginning of every year,” Wayne said. “We usually do this in January.”
Torres was not expected to be at the meeting and just after the announcement was made that he was going to be absent, Torres came running into the building.
His was the top award of the evening.
There were several others who were awarded pins, the introduction of new employees and more.
Punch and cookies and cake were provided for attendees following the ceremony.
Torres was presented a plaque that read: “In recognition for dedicated and loyal service above and beyond the call of duty.”
A few weeks ago, Wayne told the board of commissioners that he would not be seeking to renew his contract.
His last day is July 4.
A search committee is being formed by a professional group that will advertise for a new fire chief and make suggestions.
