PHOTO SPECIAL TO THE CITIZEN Country music artist Jake Clayton will perform on March 19 at the Lehigh Spring Festival at Veterans Park.

The nine-day Lehigh Spring Festival begins March 11 and continues through March 19 at Veterans Park, at 55 S. Homestead Road.

Highlighting the entertainment on March 19 is Jake Clayton, a country music artist whose band performed at the festival last year. He is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who has more than 30 appearances on the Grand Ole Opry stage, according to Judy Carter, a member of the planning board.

Carter said Clayton will bring his exceptional musical talent to the outdoors stage. Opening for him is country star Dani Dease who also played last year. She is fresh off the release of her latest CD, “Born to Live.”

Carter said both are of country music fame and are coming back to the festival because of their popularity last year.

The festival is being dedicated to the late Ernie Hartman and Myra Kessler, who were active in past festivals.

Opening ceremonies will be held at 6 p.m. on March 19 with the Clayton concert following.

Bill Hoppe, who has been very active in organizing the festival, said he begins his work this coming Saturday and will spend several days turning the park into the magical festival grounds.

“We’re doing some things different this year,” Hoppe said. “We are bringing in new carnival rides and we’re going to realign the food vendors booths and the local craft booths to make it easier for visitors to get around.”

One thing that has been changed this year is that there will be no grand parade along Homestead Road on the last Saturday. According to Andy Reisinger, chairman of the board, attendance at the parade has declined in past years.

But there will be a mini Easter Parade at Veterans Park, according to Hoppe. It will be followed by an Easter Egg Hunt.

Returning this year will be the craft show on March 12-13 and March 19. Carter said this is an opportunity for crafters to display and sell their handmade wares.

She said the Car, Truck and Bike Show will also be back again and will be held on March 19 from 2 to 6 p.m. Several trophies will be presented in many categories.

“Look for the returning stage shows every night, the carnival rides, the pageants, the horseshoe tournament. There will be pageant queens, and the Lehigh Acres Idol and more,” Carter said.

Hoppe added that the main outside stage will a little different, too. He said there will be an array of blackboards for people to sign and for children to use for play.
