Education Notes (3/30/16)

Teacher planning back

A committee comprised of Lee County school and district administrators, teachers and the Teachers Association of Lee County recently reached an agreement that will provide a full class period of planning for each teacher at the middle and high school level.

Depending on the school class schedule format, teachers will start the new school year with 47, 67 or 84 minutes of daily planning.

The 30 minutes of additional paid planning per week, provided to teachers in the newly ratified contract, further expands teacher preparation time.

The initiative comes at a cost of approximately $2.5 million.

To minimize the fiscal impact for next year, teachers will have an overall average of five more students over the course of the day.

Daily teacher planning ensures teachers will be more prepared for the quality instruction of the students, supporting goal one of the district strategic plan: Inspire students to think and learn.

This is the first time in nearly a decade that all Lee County teachers will have the opportunity to plan on a daily basis.

The district is hopeful that the improved working conditions for teachers will also help with the retention of teachers, supporting goal four of the strategic plan: Hire and retain the best talent.
