By Staff | May 11, 2016

Rae Nicely

Lehigh Acres residents who participated in the free tax preparation service provided by the United Way at Lehigh Community Services this year have a whopping $1,050,745 in tax refunds coming back to them by way of an IRS check or to their bank accounts by direct deposit.

Rae Nicely, the executive director of Lehigh Community Serves on Plaza Drive, had nothing but praise for the five volunteers who gave of their time under the leadership of Mary Meador, the coordinator. She is a teacher in Clewiston.

She and her group worked nights and other times that suited the clients’ time – and it was all free to those who qualified under income guidelines.

“We’ve been doing this for years and the volunteers always do such a terrific job,”?Nicely said. “And to realize that more than a million dollars is coming back to our Lehigh residents is just amazing.”

The tax returns were done at the Lehigh Community Services offices.

Put on in cooperation with Lehigh Community Services, the program is a free service for those who quality through income guidelines.

It was the third year for Meador to give of her time in helping people who needed help in their tax return preparation.

After it was all over the volunteer tax preparers all posed with Nicely and she thanked them all for a job well done.

According to Meador’s calculations, some 737 returns were filed just in Lehigh.

Countywide some 3,160 returns were filed at different sites throughout the county with $4,102,676 in refunds. All told, including 295 “My Free Taxes” returns, netted total refunds of $4,689,182.

The number of volunteers topped 91 program volunteers with 80 tax preparers and 11 greeters throughout Lee County.
