Backyard chickens? No, no, no
To the editor:
As a resident of Lehigh Acres for 53 years, I for one do not want to see chickens in backyards in Lehigh Acres. Our community is no longer a rural area. There are over 100,000 residents living here and our community is not just “affordable.”
I do not want to see the value of homes doing down.
I do not want to have chickens next door to my home in Willow Lake South.
I do not want to hear chickens in the morning and in the evening.
I do not want chickens wandering around the neighborhood.
I do not want businesses opening up selling eggs door to door.
I do not want the filth, smell and contamination that chickens can bring, along with feces and mosquitoes, in Lehigh Acres.
Not in my backyard!
And, while we’re at it – ducks have already taken over pooping all over. And, while we’re at it, not pigs either, donkeys, lambs, sheep, cows or horses in residential areas.
Lehigh Acres is a residential community, not a farm.
There is a flea market on Beth Stacey Boulevard and you can buy fresh produce and eggs there.
There is the Alva fresh market and Buckingham farms; you can buy fresh produce and eggs there.
Both Winn-Dixie and Publix sell eggs that are affordable that are free-range chickens and not treated with antibiotics, chemicals or pesticides.
I am sick and tired of a few changing what the majority considers and having our politicians go along with the few. Entitlement has become a joke in America.
If you decide chickens are OK in Lehigh Acres, Mr. County Commissioners, make sure it is approved for all of Lee County, including McGregor Boulevard, downtown Fort Myers, the Whiskey Creek area and everywhere constituents live – the forest, Fiddlesticks, near the country clubs, everywhere.
