County to make adjustments for upcoming July 4 holiday

By Staff | Jun 29, 2016

The Fourth of July holiday will result in some closures and schedule changes for Lee County operations. The changes include:

Solid waste

All garbage, recycling and yard waste collections in unincorporated Lee County, the city of Bonita Springs and the Town of Fort Myers Beach will take place one day after the regularly scheduled collection day for the entire week beginning July 4.

This means that if the regular collection day is Monday, the collection truck will pick up that material on Tuesday. Tuesday’s regularly scheduled pickups will occur on Wednesday and so on, the rest of the week through Saturday.

This schedule is in effect through July 9. Regular collection schedules will resume on July 11.

Lee County Solid Waste facilities and offices are closed Monday, including the Household Chemical Waste Collection Facility, located at 6441 Topaz Court, and the Resource Recovery Facility on Buckingham Road.

The Solid Waste Department urges all residents to recycle the paper, plastic, metal and glass from their Independence Day weekend activities.

Parks and Recreation

Parks, pools and preserves remain open on Monday, but offices and recreation centers are closed until July 5.

LeeTran

LeeTran will not run mainland bus or paratransit service on the holiday, but will provide trolley transportation to and on Fort Myers Beach.

The Park & Ride Trolley will run every 40 minutes starting at 7 a.m. at the free parking lot on Summerlin Square Drive. It will travel back and forth to Bowditch Point Park, with the last drop-off on the mainland at 10:50 p.m.

The Beach Trolley will start service at 6:45 a.m. at Bowditch Park, running every 30 minutes to Lovers Key State Park. Service will end at 11:40 p.m. at Bowditch Park.

Libraries

All library locations will be closed on Monday and each branch will resume regular operating hours on July 5.

Animal Services

Animal Services, at 5600 Banner Drive, Fort Myers, will be closed for the holiday, but will reopen at 8 a.m. July 5.

Utilities

The customer service center will be closed July 4.

Cape Coral Bridge

Cape Coral’s Red, White and Boom celebration will close the Cape Coral Bridge from 3 a.m. July 4 through 3 a.m. July 5.

Motorists are encouraged to use the Midpoint Memorial Bridge or the U.S. 41 and Business 41 bridges as alternate routes.

Lee County Department of Transportation will place message boards out for motorists June 30 and will keep them in place through the holiday and the closing.

The Priority Business Solutions Freedom 5K happens on Independence Day.

Onsite registration begins at 6 a.m. Race start is 7:30 a.m.

The city celebrates beginning at 5 p.m. at the foot of the Cape Coral Bridge, followed by fireworks around 9:30 p.m.
