An ounce of prevention could thwart thieves, authorities report

By Staff | Jul 13, 2016

Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s help protecting their cars and personal possessions by taking one easy step – locking car doors.

Over the last few weeks, detectives have noticed an uptick in the number of car thefts in the area.

“It takes only a moment to stop, remove the keys and lock the door,” said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers coordinator. “That one simple step will deter criminals from either breaking into, or taking your car altogether.”

“Leaving the keys inside the car is a grand invitation to criminals to commit a theft – and that’s what we don’t want to see happen to any more victims,”?she said.

In addition, drivers are reminded to keep their valuables – laptops, electronics, purses and wallets – out of plain view.

Even when a car is locked, the lure of cash or easily pawned electronics sitting on a seat could be motivation to smash a window.

Always secure items in the trunk or, ideally, bring them inside.

Anyone with information on suspicious activity is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-780-TIPS (8477). All callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
