Kiwanis Club hands out three Hometown Hero awards
The Lehigh Kiwanis Club presented awards to three Hometown Heroes at its eighth annual Community Annual Awards Banquet on June 17 at Christ United Methodist Church.
Lee County Sheriff’s Office Deputy “Rocky” Shott was presented the award for bravery and perseverance for her response to a domestic disturbance call.
When she arrived at the scene, Shott was stabbed by a woman several times. Even with severe wounds, she was able to help a second officer subdue the woman.
After the incident, Shott spent a stint in the hospital having several surgeries, then was transferred to a rehab facility, where she spent the next several months.
Upon her discharge, she chose to return to the East District.
East District Commander Capt. Todd Garrison presented the award.
Connor Blais was also honored for his unique Backpack Program.
During the summer of 2015, Blais collected backpacks and money to purchase school supplies from businesses as his project to earn his Eagle Scout Rank.
Blais coordinated his efforts with Lehigh Community Services, who partnered the project with the six elementary schools in Lehigh.
Because of Blais’ efforts, 1,500 students received backpacks full of school supplies to start the year.
Rae Nicely, executive director of Lehigh Community Services, presented the award to Blais’ father, Doug Blais.
The final honored went to Andy Reisinger for his dedication to the Spring Festival over the years.
Reisinger has served as parade chairman for 13 years and continues to serve on the Lehigh Acres Spring Festival Association Board of Directors.
The parade chair is a big responsibility and includes receiving all the reservations and seeing that all are in place and ready to go.
Fred Elliot, president of the Lehigh Acres Spring Festival Board, presented the award.
The club solicits letters of recommendation for the awards.
