Lehigh Literacy teaches English in Lehigh for years
To the editor:
Lehigh Literacy began over 30 years ago by Mary Root to help our residents learn to read and write English. Lehigh Literacy is not associated with Literacy Council of the Gulf Coast.
We have our own organization totally separate from the Literacy Council of the Gulf Coast.
Lehigh Literacy operates under the umbrella of Lehigh Community Services. Our tutors serve adults only.
We operate on a small budget and all our tutors are unpaid volunteers. Our literacy program is fortunate to have civic organizations, businesses and individuals who donate to this important program.
Our mission is to help our residents learn to read and write English. We do not teach Spanish.
Lehigh Literacy has free tutor training each quarter of the year and connects students with a tutor for one-on-one learning/or to a class session, which meets weekly.
We also have citizenship classes and have already had many former students who are now U.S. citizens.
To become a student or tutor, you can call Lehigh Community Services at 239-369-5818 for more information
