Chamber recognizes deputy

MEL TOADVINE Lee County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mark Shelly presents Deputy Megan Mata with the Officer of the Month award at the East District substation in Lehigh Acres. She was unable to attend the luncheon, where she was honored by the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce.
Two women were honored by the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce for outstanding work in two different fields.
One is a deputy with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, who won Officer of the Month. The other is a registered nurse, who was honored because of her dedication at Lehigh Regional Medical Center.
Lt. Mark Shelly, second-in-command at the East District substation, presented a certificate naming Deputy Megan Mata as the Officer of the Month for September.
Shelly told those attending the luncheon that on Aug. 27 at about 12:27 p.m., the LCSO received a call of an armed robbery at the Chase Bank, at 5767 Lee Blvd.
Information was received that three suspects, armed with handguns, robbed the bank and fled through the front doors. One suspect turned and fired a handgun at witnesses who were entering the bank at the time.

MEL TOADVINE Camela Singh, right, was presented with the Healthcare Worker of the Month award at the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon. The award was presented by Stephanie Garrepy, marketing director of Gendron Funeral & Cremation Services.
Shelly said witnesses observed the suspects run toward a nearby plaza parking lot and enter a white Dodge Charger. They took flight toward Lee Boulevard.
The information was relayed to responding units over the radio.
“Deputy Megan Mata was off duty traveling through the area in her patrol vehicle. While monitoring radio traffic she observed the Dodge Charger turn onto Leonard Boulevard. Deputy Mata relayed the information to responding units and kept the vehicle in sight. While other units were converging on her location, the suspects crashed their vehicle and took flight on foot.
“Deputy Mata was able to give a direction of travel to a K-9 officer who arrived at the crash scene. The K-9 unit tracked and apprehended one of the suspects. The other two suspects continued running in an attempt to evade capture. Responding units set up a perimeter and after an exhaustive search, successfully apprehended the remaining two suspects without incident,” Shelly said.
“Due to Deputy Mata’s swift actions on her day off, all three suspects were charged with armed robbery and transported to the Lee County Jail. Additionally, the currency taken during the robbery was recovered at the crash scene.

“Therefore, we would like to nominate Deputy Megan Mata for the Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce Deputy of the Month and commend her for making the Lehigh Acres community a safer place,” Shelly said.
Mata was unable to attend the luncheon, so Shelly held a ceremony at the substation and presented Mata with the award.
The second presentation was made to Camela Singh, a LRMC?nurse for nearly 30 years.
The award was made by Stephanie Garrepy, of Gendron Funeral and Cremation Services.
Garrepy said Singh came to LRMC from the Lee Memorial Health System in 1987.
She started out in the obstetrics and pediatric departments, and after a few years she transitioned to the medical-surgery department, where she remained until 2010, at which time the new joint academy orthopedic department opened.
“Since then Camela has been the nurse in charge, taking care of patients after their joint replacement surgery. She represents the true spirit of the nursing profession, and patients constantly send letters and make comments praising her for the excellent care they received from her during their hospital stay.
“She is also an admired and respected leader by her co-workers, who benefit from her example and training. The Lehigh Acres community is very fortunate to have this exceptional healthcare worker at their local hospital,” Garrepy said.
Singh was presented the award of Health Employee of the Month and told that the chamber was proud to recognize her.
Mike Jacobs and Mike Burgers were the emcees at the luncheon.
The luncheons are sponsored by Modern Woodmen and Gendron.
The chamber’s annual gala will be held on Jan. 28. Members were encouraged to make donations and offer sponsorships.
Lee County Commissioner Frank Mann was on hand to introduce a member of the Horizon Council, Dan Eveloff.
Eveloff spoke about the future of Lehigh with help from the council and the Lee County Economic Development Office.
Also attending the luncheon was Diane Zigrossi, who is running for the District 5 seat on the Lee County Commission. Sonny Haas is also running for the seat.
The District 5 seat is currently occupied by Mann, who is seeking re-election in November.
The next luncheon will be held on Oct. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Mirror Lakes Golf Course, at 670 Milwaukee Blvd.
