Lehigh council’s candidate forum draws small crowd

A candidate forum sponsored by the Lehigh Acres Community Council and others on Thursday, Oct. 13, attracted a small crowd of spectators.
Emcee Rick Anglickis, president of the council, called it a disappointment.
“I’m disappointed and aghast that we didn’t have more people turn out to hear what the candidates on Lehigh voters’ ballots had to say about the issues,”?he said.
Anglickis estimated that about 50 to 55 people attended the event, held in the Lehigh Acres Middle School auditorium.
He said 22 candidates participated in the forum. Anglickis noted that a candidates forum being held in Cape Coral may have prevented the other candidates from taking part in the Lehigh one.
“The crowd was small despite the fact that the forum was advertised in the local media,” he said.
Anglickis admitted that a lot of people may be apathetic to the political system.
Each of the candidates was given time to tell voters why they wanted their votes, with follow-up questions written down on sheets and passed up to the stage.
The candidates for the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District’s board talked for or against the current assessment fees being charged residents.
Some said the fee is the wrong, while others said the fire department should reconsider and return to the ad valorem way of taxing properties to support the district.
Discussions ranged from incorporation and the widening of Route 82, to Common Cores, school violence, when another high school be built in Lehigh and more.
At one point, one of the audience members shouted out at a candidate running for the fire board. Otherwise, the audience was quiet, applauding after each candidate’s presentation.
The candidates included those running for state and local offices, like Lee County School Board.
The forum lasted nearly three hours, beginning at 6 p.m.
Candidates and others brought homemade cookies and snacks.
The forum was also sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lehigh Acres and the Lehigh Acres Jaycees Foundation.
