The Medicine Shoppe offers help with Medicare

Purchasing Medicare or an advantage or supplemental plan can be complicated. The information can be hard to understand, especially when there are changes every year that affect the coverage terms.

Pharmacist Abed Aryan, with The Medicine Shoppe, said his pharmacy can help those needing information.

Beginning this week, professional consultants will be available to talk to people new to Medicare and those who have changes their policies.

Vic Blackwelder, Ken Hesss or Chris Redding will be in-store daily today through Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; walk-ins are welcome.

The new coverage begins Dec. 7.

If you are on a plan and do not make any changes, nor contact the insurance companies that work with Medicare, your membership will automatically continue with the added changes.

Aryan said there are changes to several Medicare plans and those plans associated with Medicare, such as advantage plans and supplemental plans.

“The cost of co-pays may go up or down with your primary doctor or with specialists you may be referred to or choose to go to. You could select a plan that you pay no extra costs and no co-pay with your primary doctor. Co-pays with specialists may change and there are differences many times between PPOs and HMOs,” Aryan said.

The cost of co-pays and medications may change, too, including medications that are covered.

“This is a free service and we have been providing consultants at our pharmacy since 2006,” he said.

Customers will meet privately with the consultants at the pharmacy. The specialists will be able to make suggestions based on a person’s budget and requirements.

Aryan said it is important for first-time Medicare applicants to bring a list of their medications and their health records. Those on supplement plans and advantage plans should do the same.

He added that they should also bring in their insurance cards.

The three consultants are with Blue Water Insurance Advisors, located in Fort Myers.

“They are here to answer all your questions and to make sure you get the best plan for your situation,” Aryan said. “They are not here to sell you insurance, but to advise you.”

More information may be obtained by calling The Medicine Shoppe at 239-368-0843.

“There may be many seniors and others on Medicare who want to switch plans before the Dec. 6 deadline. Coverage begins the next day for the new year,” he said.

Some pharmacies now in the Medicare coverage network could change, too.

The Medicine Shoppe is at 57 N. Homestead Road.
