Rooney re-elected in District 17
Republican Tom Rooney won his re-election bid by a landslide.
Rooney got 61.87 percent of the vote Tuesday night to retain his seat in the U.S. House, District 17, for which he will serve for a third term. Democrat April Freeman earned 34.2 percent of the vote, while unaffiliated John W. Sawyer drew barely a ripple, with 3.93 percent.
Rooney was not available for comment. Neither was Sawyer.
Freeman, who also lost a House bid in the 19th District in 2014 in both the special and regular election, was hoping more name recognition would take her to victory Tuesday. It wasn’t meant to be.
“It is what it is. I’ve been here before. We may have missed something in our campaign,” Freeman said. “I’m thankful to the voters for their support. I appreciate it.”
Freeman said she will mull over another possible run in the future.
