Caldwell cruises to fourth term
Republican incumbent Matt Caldwell won his fourth – and final – term in Tallahassee with a double-digit victory Tuesday over Democrat John Scott and unaffiliated Matt Miller.
Caldwell took 51.2 percent of the vote to Scott’s 38.24 percent in the race for the District 79 House seat. Miller performed strong for an unaffiliated candidate and got 10.57 percent.
“I’m blessed to have an opportunity to work on the things we need to get done,” Caldwell said from Tampa, where he was watching the results as a member of the State House Majority team. “I’m excited to be able to serve for a final term.”
Caldwell faced criticism, including some within his own party, from those who said he wasn’t doing enough to improve the water quality in the Caloosahatchee River.
Caldwell said voters were able to see through that, adding that he had done a lot on the local level to clean the water.
“What it was were people pushing personal vendettas. We’re going to keep working on Everglades restoration and buckle down on projects in Lee County,” Caldwell said. “We’re also going to focus on other issues important to the district such as education, job growth and improving the success of the blue-collar sector.”
