To the editor:

Our current approach to civilization resembles a certain wayward, ill-starred mode of rock sorting. Yes, it is the Conservative approach.

Instead of sorting the rocks into two piles, “good” and “needing work,” we sort them into one pile, “good” and toss the rest up onto our flat roof, “out of sight, out of mind.” It works – for a while.
