Sixth Annual Wings Over Water Festival set for the weekend

The Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District will host the Sixth Annual Wings Over Water Festival on Jan. 20-21 at Harns Marsh.

“The WOW Festival showcases to the importance of LA-MSID’s mission and provides a unique opportunity for community members to connect with local organizations and experience nature through an array of interactive experiences,” Ken Thompson, the chairman of the LA-MSID Board of Commissioners, said.

On Jan. 20, a presentation will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Explore the history of Harns Marsh, learn about its water control features and discover the flora and fauna.

LA-MSID Manager David Lindsay will discuss the future plans and development for Harns Marsh and the West Marsh.

There is no admission, however, reservations are preferred online at: january20harnsmarsh.eventbrite.com.

The WOW Festival Community Day on Jan. 21 will feature vendors and exhibitors, a plant sale, children’s activities and more.

Something new this year is the Wings Over Water 5K Nature Run, presented by the Lehigh Acres Rotary Club and the Lehigh Acres Regional Medical Center.

Organizer Earl Hart noted that walkers are welcome to register.

While advanced registration is preferred, day of registration will kick-off at 6:45 a.m. on Jan. 21.

The race begins at 7:45 a.m.

“The race has become a staple in the history of both the Lehigh Acres Spring Festival and in the lives of the community members,” Hart said. “The race provides an opportunity for the residents to get involved in the future of its children and to have a little fun in the process.”

Annually, the Rotary Club hosts the 5K. This year, the race joined the Wings Over Water Festival and was rebranded. The new logo was designed by Jade Bouhler, a current University of Central Florida student who is from Lehigh.

Race participants will be divided into categories by age and gender, with trophies awarded to the top finishers in each group.

Participants can pre-register up until March 14 for $20 for adults and $10 for ages 18 and under. To pre-register visit: www.ftmyerstrackclub.com/.

Race day registration is $25 for adults and $15 for youth.

Following the race and awards ceremony, the official opening will be held for the Sixth Annual WOW Festival Community Day.

The festival will feature a variety of on-site activities from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., including lectures from experts, exhibitions by wildlife and education-related organizations and businesses, free blood pressure checks by the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District, guided walks and more.

Home Depot will host a free birdhouse building activity.

An annual staple at the festival is the Rubber Duckie Race. Hosted by Coldwell Banker Preferred Properties, the event helps to raise funds for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Ducks will be available for purchase at the festival or in advance by calling 239-369-6161.

The festival speakers include:

– Mark Renz, fossil guide and author, will discuss being prepared and knowing what to look for when fossil hunting and will showcase some of his local finds

– Steve “Snakeman” Masek will introduce guests to a variety of invasive exotic animals that are threatening native populations of Southwest Florida animals through hands-on presentations

– Jim Hull, a fifth generation Floridian and member of a Southwest Florida pioneer family, will share Lee County’s history

The Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce will sell food to raise money for the activities that it puts on.

The Rotary Club will also host a farmers market on site.
