The Lehigh Acres Community Council has nominated a local woman to Lee Builders Care, asking the non-profit for help mend problems at her home.

In the letter, the council stated Barbara Kerby needs help replacing her roof. Builders Care is being asked to fix the roof, which has two broken skylights and two flat areas that will need to have a slope added.

The council wrote that it is asking for help for Kerby because she has been a Lehigh resident for 20 years and has contributed to the community in many ways.

“She served on the Community Council as a representative of the local water company (FGUA), then stayed on the council after being laid off from her job. She was forced to leave the council when she accepted a job working in retail,” the letter states.

Although Kerby raised her son, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, alone, it did not stop her from volunteering. While her son was a Boy Scout, she was a merit badge councilor, helping her son and four other boys earn their Eagle rank, the highest honor available. She also contributed hundreds of hours to a school for special needs children that her son attended.

The council also noted that Kerby has contributed hundreds of hours of environmental education in the public schools in Lee and Collier counties and earned the Partner in Education Award for her volunteer work in Collier County schools. In Lehigh, she worked with Veterans Park summer camps for many years, providing environmental education programs. One year, she provided a weekly science club for the elementary students in the after-school program.

She also has donated many hours to the Lehigh Spring Festival and helped with fundraisers for the community food bank and the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce.

The council cited its request for help for Kerby because of her many activities in Lehigh.

Mike Welch, chairman of the Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District, noted the founding of Lee Builders Care.

“It’s a marvelous organization and has helped a lot here in Lehigh,” he said.

Welch was involved at the start of the organization.

“They do miraculous things,”?he said. “They are angels who help others.”

Cristi Sarus is the executive director of Lee Builders Care. The organization typically researches the request, then decides whether it is able to help out.

The Lehigh Acres Community Council meets on the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at 1299 Homestead Road.

The meetings are open to the public; public input permitted.
