SPECIAL TO THE CITIZEN The Lehigh Acres chapter of the American Business Women’s Association awarded the 2017 Onnadine Hosler Impact Scholarship to Alexis Macchio on June 8 at its dinner meeting.

A Lehigh Acres organization recently awarded a $1,000 annual scholarship to one local student.

On June 8, the Lehigh Acres chapter of the American Business Women’s Association gave the 2017 Onnadine Hosler Impact Scholarship to Alexis Macchio during its meeting. According to member Judy Carter, Macchio is currently enrolled in the nursing program at Florida SouthWestern State College.

Having just completed her first year, she will return to FSW in the fall as she works toward a bachelor’s degree. Macchio’s immediate goal is to be a trauma nurse in the ER or a neo-natal nurse in the NICU.

Her long-term goal is to become a nurse practitioner once she earns her degree, Carter added.

At the meeting, the chapter welcomed Macchio as a new student member of the group.

According to Carter, the scholarship is open to all females who will attend an accredited college, university or community/vocational school. Eligible applicants must a resident of Lehigh Acres, Alva or Buckingham and they must be at least a college freshman in August with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

The scholarship is funded through the Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Fund.

Also at the meeting, member Joyce Hayle – a local published author – talked about how to get published. The chapter also celebrated the 70th birthday of one of the members, Vicki Culver.
