An arrest has been made involving a deadly crash that occurred in April in Lehigh Acres.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported that after a thorough traffic homicide investigation, investigators arrested and charged Andy Enrique Gonzalez, 21, for his involvement in the fatal crash that occurred on Leeland Heights Boulevard and Maple Avenue South.

He was booked into the Lee County Jail on July 8 with one count each of vehicular homicide and reckless driving with damage. As of July 10, Gonzalez remained at the jail on no bond.

At about 3:05 p.m. April 30, a Nissan Altima was westbound on Maple and attempted to make a left turn onto Leeland. The Nissan traveled into the roadway and was struck by a Saturn SUV, which was headed northbound on Leeland, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the Nissan was transported via helicopter to the hospital with critical injuries.

Ernest Wayne Peterson, 82, of Lehigh Acres, sustained fatal injuries in the crash.

Following the accident, deputies were asking anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward. They had spoken to one witness but were still interested in speaking to anyone else who saw the incident.

Gonzalez has a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 7.
