Registering for Santa’s Surprise for Seniors

Lehigh Community Services, in collaboration with The Salvation Army and Presbyterian Homes of Lehigh Acres, will host Santa’s Surprise for Seniors.

To quality for a basket, applicants must be a Lehigh resident and a low-income senior – age 60 and up – with proof of income; a photo ID will also be required.

To register, stop by Lehigh Community Services, at 201 Plaza Drive, Suite 3, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. today, Dec. 1 or Dec. 4-8.

Limited to 350 recipients.

Applicants are encouraged to dress in red and green on distribution day.

Gardening class set

Hosted by Lee County 4-H, a presentation on easy food to grow in Southwest Florida will be held on Dec. 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Veterans Park Recreation Center, at 55 Homestead Road S.

Taught by Master Gardener Karen Harty.

Cost is $10; free for those who attend with a child ages 8-18.

Mortgage assistance, disaster relief event

The HOPE NOW Alliance, in partnership with local mortgage and housing counseling companies, will host a free mortgage assistance and disaster relief event on Dec. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, at 4701 Summerlin Road, Fort Myers.

Homeowners having difficulties with their mortgage can find valuable resources at the event, as the program is geared to handle a broad variety of financial hardships.

Access to financial industry experts, including mortgage servicers and HUD-approved nonprofit housing counselors, with experts available to discuss solutions, provide advice, check financial assistance eligibility and enroll homeowners in the right assistance programs.

Homeowners will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.

Band to perform

The Lee County Community Band will present a Christmas concert on Dec. 10 at 3 p.m. at Cape Coral High School, at 2300 Santa Barbara Blvd.

The concert is free; donations will be accepted.

– March 11

– April 8

Comprised of professional and amateur musicians from Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties, the band rehearses Thursdays in Fort Myers; new members welcome.

Annual Holiday Town Reception announced

The Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District will host a Holiday Town Reception on Dec. 14 from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. at 601 East County Lane.

The forum will provide an opportunity to hear about efforts impacting Lehigh Acres from elected officials, including Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto, Sen. Kathleen Passidomo, Rep. Matt Caldwell and Lee County Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass.

The reception is free and open to the community.

A light buffet and refreshments will be provided.

Develop Lee Marketing Meeting scheduled

Develop Lehigh and others will host a Develop Lee Marketing Meeting on Dec. 14 from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. at the Lee County Economic Development Office, at 2201 Second St., Fort Myers.

The Commercial Revitalization Task Force was formed by the Lee County Economic Development Office and the Horizon Council with the mission to provide a forum to discuss creative ways to revitalize areas of Lee County that have lagged the ongoing economic recovery. The task force consists of business owners and civic leaders.

SWFL Concert Band to present concert

The Southwest Florida Concert Band will perform Dec. 17 at 3 p.m. First Baptist Church of Lehigh Acres, at 200 Lee Blvd.

The band will collect donations for of non-perishable food items for Lehigh Community Services.

The concert is free; donations will be accepted.

– March 18

– April 15

The band is always accepting new musicians who play at a senior high school level, college level or above. Rehearsals are held every Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Food Pantry coming

Community Cooperative will host its Mobile Food Pantry on Dec. 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Veterans Community Park, at 55 Homestead Road S.

Annual Old Fashioned Family Fun planned

The Lee County 4-H will host its fourth annual Old Fashioned Family Fun on Jan. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Veterans Park, at 55 Homestead Road S.

Admission is free.

There will be a petting zoo, plus activities for families to participate in like racing, throwing, running and jumping.

Parents are encouraged to participate with their child.

Participants can turn in filled out “passports” to win prizes donated by area sponsors.

Pool offering classes

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., is heated and open year-round.

A range of swim lesson skill levels are offered, including adult beginners; all taught by American Red Cross Certified instructors.

Eight classes for $50.

Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose from a fast-paced workout at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday or the ultra-low impact class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and Friday. Classes are 45 minutes long in chest deep water.

Plant, tree sale set

A plant sale will be held on the last Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon at Lakes Regional Park, at 7330 Gladiolus Drive, Fort Myers.

It includes succulents, small trees, native plants, herbs, annuals, bromeliads, rose bushes and more.

Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions.

There is a $1 per hour parking fee, with a maximum of $5.
