East County library presents programs

The activities for January at the East County Regional Library, at 881 Gunnery Road.

The following programs are free and open to the public:

Adult programs

– Beginning Computer Skills

Part 1: 10:30 a.m. Jan. 5

Part 2: 10:30 a.m. Jan. 12

A technology instructor will cover a variety of topics including using a mouse, establishing an email account and using library online resources. Space is limited and registration is required.

– Ukulele Cafe

2:30 p.m. Jan. 6

This program starts with a half-hour of free ukulele lessons followed by an hour of free-style jamming and group play. Registration required. Instruments not provided.

– Chess Anyone?

2 p.m. Jan. 8, 22 and 29

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. Chess enthusiasts of all ages are welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours.

– Book Discussion: “The Devil in the White City” by Erik Larson

3:30 p.m. Jan. 8

Erik Larson intertwines the true tale of the 1893 World’s Fair and the cunning serial killer who used the fair to lure his victims to their death.

– English Cafe

6 p.m. Jan. 8, 22 and 29

Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.

– Intermediate Computer Skills

10 a.m. Jan. 9

Learn intermediate computer skills with the guidance of a technology instructor. Using Windows 7, this class covers a variety of topics including identifying keyboard shortcuts, using the control panel, removing programs, backing up files and more. Space is limited and registration is required.

– Knitting Nook

5 p.m. Jan. 10 and 24

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share ideas, techniques and projects. Attendees should bring their own projects; basic materials are available for newcomers.

– Word and Excel Basics

10 a.m. Jan. 16

A technology instructor will provide a basic introduction to Word and Excel for new users. Using Office 2016, learn how to create and save documents, format pages, change fonts and create basic spreadsheets. Space is limited and registration is required.

– Social Media Basics

10 a.m. Jan. 23

What are tweets and status updates? How do I video chat with family and friends? A technology instructor will teach essential skills to make use of today’s top social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Skype. Space is limited and registration is required.

– Download Drop-In

11 a.m. Jan. 23

Receive personalized help downloading e-books, movies, music, and more from the library’s online library. Bring your tablets, phones, e-readers, and other digital devices for a hands-on help session. Registration is requested.

– Rock Around the Clock

2 p.m. Jan. 27

Dave Kilbride takes music lovers of all ages on a tuneful journey through the hits of the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s. Registration is required.

Children’s programs

– STEAM = Science! Technology! Engineering! Art! Math!

11 a.m. Jan. 4

Get creative with crafts and activities that feature math, science, engineering, arts and building. Kids can create and experiment with fun hands-on activities.

– R.E.A.D. to Dogs

11 a.m. Jan. 13

R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team to help improve the literacy skills of children.

– Kids Read Down Fines

10 to 11 a.m. Jan. 20

Children and teens can earn a $2 credit for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Credit may be applied to cards issued to age 18 and under only and overdue charges. Bring your library card.

Storytime

– Toddler Tales

10 a.m. Jan. 10, 17, 24 and 31

This interactive and active time for toddlers and their caregiver is designed to advance pre-reading and social skills. First come, first served.

– Preschool Storytime

10:30 a.m. Jan. 10, 17, 24 and 31

Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other kids, books and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them. First come, first served.

– Baby Rhyme Time

10 a.m. Jan. 11, 18 and 25

During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance. First come, first served.

– Family Storytime

10:30 a.m. Jan. 11, 18 and 25

Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of pre-reading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories. First come, first served.

Teen programs

– East County Anime Club

4:30 p.m. Jan. 9 and 23

For teens and tweens interested in anime, manga and Japanese culture. We watch anime together and make themed crafts. Program limited to grades 6-12. Maximum attendees 25.

– DIY Teen Crafts

2 p.m. Jan. 16

Start the New Year on the right note by giving back to the community. Help make no-sew fleece blankets to donate to Project Linus, which will give them to local children in need. Program limited to high school students. Maximum attendees 10.

– Kids Read Down Fines

10 to 11 a.m. Jan. 20

– Tween Saturdays

2 p.m. Jan. 20

Robots are taking over the library. Test out some Ozobots and Sphero robots and play around with coding. For grades 5-8. Maximum attendees 10.

– Wii and Board Games

2 p.m. Jan. 29

A variety of Nintendo Wii games and board games are available in this drop-in program. First come, first served. Program limited to high school students. Maximum attendees 25.

– DIY Teen Crafts

2 p.m. Jan. 30

3D Printing pens are coming to the library. Use a high-tech pen to draw a 3D picture in plastic instead of ink. Program limited to high school students. Maximum attendees 9.
