Lehigh man, another charged by Fort Myers police in shooting
The Fort Myers Police Department responded to a shooting last week that came to an end in Lehigh Acres.
According to officials, the shooting started on Dec. 26 near Hanson Street in Fort Myers and continued with a chase of the fleeing vehicle at high rates of speed along several streets in East Fort Myers. The pursuit ended with the suspect’s car crashing into a canal east of Sunshine Boulevard.
Two men fled the submerged vehicle and were apprehended at 1861 Lockhaven Court, with the assistance of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Arrested were Derrick Lemar Edwards, 43, of Fort Myers, who was charged with fleeing and eluding, possession of firearm by a convicted felon and additional drug charges.
Also arrested was Carey Latroy Bursey, 21, of 2510 67th St. W., who was charged with resisting arrest and drug possession.
Officers were able to recover the fully submerged vehicle with a firearm still inside.
Both suspects were transported to the Lee County Jail for booking.
