Who is in charge here?
To the editor:
I am often confronted by, “You would not be here if it was not for the military,” and ‘Why are you against our military?”.
My response is, “No it is not your military.” The military belongs to the people of America. And my second response is, “I am here because of the people of America.” The security of America is the responsibility of the people. Remember, the military works for the people. As does the government. The questioner is usually a young white male. (I don’t think they’re rich).
We complain about government at every level. Something is wrong, people. We are in charge. We need to come together.
The all-voluntary military is a product of government. (The rich). They concluded that the poor and the middle class would volunteer (for a price) to serve to replace those who are rich and educated who refuse to serve. Therefore, we have AVM (mercenaries). This decision was made not on basis of patriotism or good citizenship. I would think that those getting the most benefit from our society would be the first to serve.
This is a representative democracy with government of, for, and by the people. So when we complain about gun violence, childhood poverty, working poor etc. ,we have what we elected.
Recently, we sent a probe to Mars. We are failing miserably in taking care of our environment. Many families, with both parents working, are not making enough to live on.
Just 1 percent of our military budget would solve many of our problems.
Perhaps with the 2018 election we can start to do a better job of taking care of ourselves and the world we live in.
