East County Regional Library expands adult programs
East County Regional Library has begun expanding its adult programs to offer something for all ages.
Regional Branch Manager Samantha Wallace said she noticed when she first began at the library that they did not have enough programs on the agenda for adults. She said they had many programs for young people, but nothing really for those within the 20- to 26-year old group.
“That age, 20 to 26 is still a transition component into adulthood,” Wallace said.
A programming librarian, Sarah Allison, was recently brought onto the staff to provide programs beneficial to adults.
“I want her to grab something that will be beneficial to our adults and that is what Sarah is working on and generating,” Wallace said. “She wants to make sure our adults know we are thinking about them. We are having more adult programming for parents – mothers and fathers are coming out. Everyone needs to let their hair down and have some fun.”
She said that act allows networking to be had, while showing appreciation for each other.
“To laugh and really enjoy the moment and that is what we want to create,” Wallace said.
One of the adult programs, Invasive Species Awareness, will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11. Wallace said someone from Wildlife of South Florida will be doing the presentation to teach people how to identify nonnative wildlife animals because they are really causing devastation to the environment.
“It’s another way to teach people how to be responsible to what is happening in your backyard, neighborhood and community,” Wallace said. “It is bringing awareness that we too want to educate people on various things. It’s a process of information. Sharing information is caring.”
Another program, 3D Pens for Adults, will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14.
“We are making Christmas ornaments and others with 3D creation,” Wallace said. “This is an opportunity for them to take this project and create some 3D image, or ornament that they can place on their tree, or a gift for someone if they choose.”
Hall explained the 3D pen is similiar to a laser pen. She said there is a piece of plastic that is fed into the pen and once the plastic is melted it can be shaped into whatever is desired.
A fun event for the family is Movie Day: Elf from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15.
“We are trying to create opportunities for family” activities,” Head of Youth Services Angela Hall said. “A lot of our parents who are stay-at-home moms, or dads, they come in and the other doesn’t get to participate. We are creating outlets and entertainment for them as well.”
East County Regional Library is at 881 Gunnery Road North. For more information call 239-533-4200, or visit www.leegov.com for a full list of programs.
