Joel Boulevard redesign ill-conceived
To the editor:
The Lee county Department Of Transportation recently revealed plans to redesign Joel Boulevard from “Country Club” to “East 17th” street, ostensibly in an effort to improve safety. The plan specifies a reduction of lanes from 4 to 2 (with a center turn lane), and to dedicate the remaining 10-foot right of way to five-foot bike and pedestrian paths on either side of the road. We believe this is an ill-conceived effort.
There are many safety concerns generated by this plan. In addition, the inconvenience, aggravation, and anger this plan will engender is intolerable to the public. We therefore petition the Board of County Commissioners to direct a review of this plan, so to find other alternative traffic control measures and remedies to the perceived cause of the plan.
Almost 300 people have already signed this petition. If you think, as we do, that this is a bad idea, please sign the petition at: www.change.org/p/lee-county-board-of-county-commissioners-the-redesign-of-joel-blvd-from-4-to-3-lanes or just Google “Joel Blvd Petition”
