March 2 marks Little League opening day
The Lehigh Acres Little League season practices are under way, with the youngsters gearing up for opening day on March 2.
Little League President Chris Vannote said they had tryouts and a draft week the third week of January closing registration for this season.
“Last year we had five major teams and this year we have three. We have more t-ball teams than ever. We have six T-ball teams,” he said.
The major teams range in age from 9 to 12 and the T-ball teams are for those 4 to 7 years old.
“Starting this year the 13 year olds moved up to junior league.
Each team, on average, practices twice a week, with an occasional practice on Saturday if there is an extra spot.
“Games are Monday through Saturday for the regular season and then tournament champions in April, or May will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” Vannote said.
The Little League play its games at Williams Park, and during the season they will travel to LaBelle, Immokalee, Fort Myers Beach, San Carlos and Bonita to play other districts.
There is an opportunity for high school kids to do community service with the Lehigh Acres Little League. They just have to sign up and fill out a volunteer form at the field.
Last year’s season ended well for the Little League major team.
“They won State Championship. That was exciting. They went to Georgia for the regionals. That is the first time a Little League team in Lehigh did that,” he said.
Vannote said they are looking for sponsors for the 2019 season. Those interested can email email@example.com.
