Meeting on new east zone high school set
The School District of Lee County invites future students, their parents and the community to a presentation about the construction of East Zone High School MMM. The meeting will be held this Thursday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of Varsity Lakes Middle School.
The evening will feature a digital tour of the school, a short presentation from the builder and a chance to ask questions.
“The target audience is parents whose children may eventually go to the school but it’s open to anyone who would like to attend,” said Rob Spicker, school district spokesperson. “The principal and the staff from Suffolk Construction will be on hand to make comments during the evening.”
“I hope as many families as possible come see the vision we have for what is going to be an amazing high school,” said MMM Principal Neketa Watson in a prepared statement. “I look forward to meeting everyone and can’t wait to share the incredible opportunities we have planned for students at the newest high school in Lee County.”
Four new academic programs have been added to the school: Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Diploma; Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID); Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement.
Previously it was announced High School MMM would offer academies in Cyber Security, Medical Assisting, Veterinary Assisting and Culinary. Now, a Carpentry Academy is being added to address the specific needs of the local construction industry.
“Since carpentry was a need stressed by the construction industry, the school decided to add the carpentry program. Our focus with all of these programs is for kids to be career or college ready at the time of graduation. These academies can offer certifications that are needed for immediate employment. Otherwise it might cost students thousands of dollars to go to a technical school,” Spicker said.
According to Spicker, the new high school will help alleviate over-crowding in the school district’s eastern region.
“In the East Zone, the population is exploding and it’s where we needed another high school. Lehigh Senior and Riverdale high schools are the largest in regards to student population in the county,” Spicker said.
High School MMM will be built in the Gateway neighborhood of Fort Myers on Griffin Drive near State Road 82. Suffolk Construction will start work to build the campus fall 2019.
“The school board has already approved the budget so site work will start relatively soon. We will plan for groundbreaking sometime in November,” Spicker said.
Students will move into the buildings for the first day of school in August 2021.
In 2021, freshmans getting ready to attend East Zone MMM, will be housed in portables staged at Lehigh Senior High School. They will have their own entrances and exits, bathrooms and separate classes.
According to Spicker, the next school the county has in line for construction is Middle School MM.
Varsity Lakes Middle School is at 801 Gunnery Road N. in Lehigh Acres.
