Registration under way for pet shelter 5K

By Staff | Feb 20, 2020

Next month, Cape Coral residents and their four-legged family members can take part in a 5K race to benefit the Cape Coral Animal Shelter.

On March 21, the inaugural Rescue Run 5K steps off at the animal shelter at 8 a.m. where participants can walk or run with their dogs joining along.

“The inaugural Rescue Run 2020 5K is the newest signature event for the Cape Coral Animal Shelter,” said Pamela Aubuchon, event organizer and shelter board member. “In line with Board of Director team and the Cape Coral Animal Shelter mission, vision and values, we’re providing an event where we invite the engagement and special bond people and their pets in an outdoor, health and wellness themed setting in beautiful Cape Coral.”

Participants are encouraged to be certain that their pet is able to run the 5K (3.1 miles) in a healthy and safe manner. There will be water stations along the way to hydrate both runners and their pups.

It costs $30 to register for the race if you do so before March 1 and $35 otherwise.

Registrations received by March 1 will guarantee a specially designed event T-shirt.

“This specially designed Rescue Run logo is the creation of the nationally award winning artist, Mark Herron of MR Studios,” Aubuchon said. “Mark has generously shared is time and talent with the Cape Coral Animal Shelter from the early years and continues to dedicated his talent to the Cape Coral Animal Shelter.”

Dogs are asked to be held on standard leashes only — no retractable leashes will be permitted for safety protocol. And of course, organizers ask that you be ready to pick up after your good boy or girl.

The 5K is a competitive, timed run event by 3D Racing. Trophies and medal awards will be given to overall winners for each category.

“Those wishing to run/walk or walk the special Rescue Run route may do so in keeping mindful of the runners and staying to the right of the route path,” Aubuchon said.

Categories include overall male/female, overall master male/female, overall grand-masters male/female and overall senior grand-masters male/female.

Winners in each of the many age groups will also receive honors.

Aubuchon said the 5K is one of many events and ways Cape Coral’s first no-kill animal shelter can open its door in the very near future.

“For the Animal Shelter, it is the year of completing the first phase of our very special and most needed passion project,” Aubuchon said. “The Cape Coral Animal Shelter plans to officially open in March of 2020. Grand Opening celebration plans are currently underway by the Board of Directors team. We are all very excited for this wondrous moment of bringing dreams into realty! Together we will continue on the journey of making a marked difference in our community and beyond through leadership, awareness, training and education programs along with medical care provided in the Cape Coral Animal Shelter’s state-of-the-art medical clinic.”

The Cape Coral Animal Shelter is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization established in August of 2016.

Its mission is, “To engage a special bond between people and animals by means of adoption services, medical care, education and training for the prevention of cruelty and abandonment. A safe place, where animals will remain in our care until they are placed in a qualified, forever home.”

The Cape Coral Animal Shelter broke ground in late 2018 and the 6,512-square-foot facility is expected to be completed in early 2020. Liz McCauley serves as the shelter’s executive director.

“The Cape Coral Animal Shelter will bring hope to Southwest Florida’s homeless dogs and cats by understanding their needs and bringing an increased level of awareness to the intolerance of animal abuse in our community,” Aubuchon said. “Animal guests in our care will receive excellent medical care and rehabilitation training whereby upon readiness these pets can be placed in a qualified and loving forever home. Together, we can run the higher road in our community through awareness, leadership, education and training for the well being for all two legged and four legged in our community.”
