American Legion Unit 323: Gearing up again!
Submitted by Pat Whitehall
Even though our current hours of 2 to 10 p.m. haven’t increased, we’re getting together as often and safely as possible to continue our missions of aid to the veterans and our community. Because of the pandemic, in accordance with our District’s suggestion, instead of holding elections, we have retained last year’s officers unless the person needed or wanted to vacate the position. We are also starting to work on the upcoming programs for the 2020/2021 year.
One of the first things the Auxiliary is doing is the Back- to-School Backpack program, but unlike previous years, we will not be having the children and parents in the hall. To maintain the safe distancing, the distribution will be done as a drive through. Our Unit President is adamant about continuing with this vital program and has been working hard to supplement the necessary items needed to make this a success and contacting the parents of the students who are participating in this event.
Another program we have been working on is assisting Eva’s Closet and Foundation. By donating to this organization, we are reaching out to the community, not just to our veterans. To those of you who are unaware of this organization, Eva’s Closet provides assistance to people in need and helps more than 1,000 persons a month. They serve those suffering from homelessness, poverty and other risk factors.
Some of the items we are donating are clothing, shoes, hygiene items, baby supplies, food, household goods & school supplies. All this is done with honor and respect. Eva’s Closet is at 16331 Old US 41 # 101 & is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you want to donate or even ask for help, the phone number is 239-339-3216. You do not need to be a member of our Unit to participate in this worthy venture. To find more information on this excellent Foundation, go to Eva’s Closet, Fort Myers and learn everything you need to know from this website. They always have a list of the most urgently needed items.
We are serving dinners again beginning in August; Taco Tuesdays, Wednesday Wings, Thursday Burgers, Fridays and Saturdays will have different courses every week and all meals are from 5 to 7 p.m. while Sunday mornings will offer cook to order breakfasts, from 9 a.m. to noon. Tuesday afternoons will be the Bingo games everyone has been asking to be returned.
As the pandemic begins to wind down, the Post, SAL, Auxiliary and Riders will begin to Gear Up again with many more of our normal activities. Hope to see you soon!
