Veterans Park offers after school and fun day programs
Veterans Park Recreation Center continues to offer both an after-school program and fun days for families in the Lehigh Acres community.
The after school program called Club Rec runs from 2 to 6 p.m. and provides children an outlet to burn off after school energy and stress through organized games, activities, sports, crafts and homework time. Club Rec is offered Monday through Friday, on days when school is in session — not during county holidays.
“Our Club Rec is open to kids second grade to the eighth grade. It’s a drop in type program, open access. Families just need to have a rec membership, and it’s $100 per child, per semester,” Supervisor Parks & Recreation Rebecca Flora said. “The kids take part in both indoor and outdoor activities, gymnasium time, plus time in our game room. We also have arts and crafts. Time to do homework and a snack time.”
According to Flora, currently there’s plenty of room and they are accepting new registrations.
“Our numbers are low. We did reduce our program capacity from 90 to 60, but right now we only have 18 children registered. We have plenty of space and openings,” Flora said. “Masks are optional, but not required.”
The recreation center also offers Fun Days during the year.
“We will have three or four Fun Days remaining this year. Our next one is Sept. 28. It’s $15 per child and is for kids’ ages six to 13 years of age. It runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. They need to bring a lunch and two snacks and a water bottle. They will do a variety of things throughout the day. Each day we will have a lesson plan with morning activities, a snack and lunch break, games, activities, outdoor sports and a water day at the splash pad,” Flora said.
The following Fun Day session will be the week of Thanksgiving, Nov. 23 through the 25.
Presently the Veterans Park Recreation Center’s weight room and adult/children programs normally held inside remain closed.
“We are looking to possibly move our adult classes and kids programs outdoors. We still need to find instructors for some of these classes,” Flora said. “We are also looking at having our Fall event in conjunction with the Lehigh Acres Fire Department this year. It might be a drive-thru, Halloween themed event, but we still need to work out the details.”
Veterans Park operations remain open with paths and parks open dawn to dusk.
The park and recreation center are located 55 Homestead Road South, Lehigh Acres. For more information visit: https://www.leegov.com/parks/parks/veterans.
