Rubish pickup delayed in Lehigh Acres
Residents in Lehigh Acres, Buckingham, Alva, Fort Myers Shores, Tice and Riverdale experienced delays in their curbside garbage pickup on Wednesday.
The impacted areas included Area 4 with ZIP codes of 33905, 33920, 33936, 33971, 33972, 33973, 33974 and 33976.
Solid Waste Director Doug Whitehead, during a live Facebook update the following morning, Oct. 1, said as many residents know, collection of their rubish is running late with their contractor Advanced Disposal.
“At this time we expect garbage collection in your area to be one day late,” he said. “Advanced Disposal Services has brought in drivers from out of county. We are continuing to work with them and monitor their performance.”
Solid Waste staff on Thursday were monitoring all routes in the area to ensure pickups were occurring. The county asks that residents put their cart by the curb on their regular pickup day and leave it there until it is emptied.
“If there are any issues you can call us at our phone number for Lee County Solid Waste,” Whitehead said during the Facebook update. “I can confirm that we believe at this time garbage collection will be completely cleaned up by Saturday, that is our expectation. Again we are working with Advanced Disposal to make sure that happens. Thank you very much for your patience. We appreciate it and we are working to make sure this does not happen in the future.”
The delay in curbside pickup was due to Advanced Disposal’s drivers staging a walkout, which Lee County Solid Waste had no advanced notice that there were potential personnel issues related to the contracted franchise hauler. As of Wednesday, 25 percent of the scheduled households in the impacted area received regular service.
Lee County is keeping the impacted residents informed by posting updates on its Facebook page, Lee County Government, www.leegov.com and www.leegov.com/solidwaste.
