3rd Annual Trunk or Treat set for Saturday
Southwest Florida Shield will host its third annual Trunk or Treat event on Oct. 24, from 4 to 9 p.m. The event will be held at Mugs n’ Jugs Family Grille at 5512 8th Street West, Lehigh.
Last year the event drew strong community support.
All proceeds will go towards a program called Shield4Kids.
SWFL Shield partnered up with Benches for Our Babes last year to begin the Lehigh bench program.
“Our program is aimed towards keeping our kids safe by providing benches at the local bus stops and to make road flares and LED beacons available to parents at each bus stop,” Southwest Florida SHIELD Foundation Founder James Branham said.
The evening will feature a variety of activities for kids and their families including a car show, costume contest for the kids, hay ride, pumpkin carving, raffles, games and awards for the best decorated vehicle.
Participants can enter to be in the car show for a small registration fee.
“We invite local businesses to come display and dress up their vehicles. All the money raised will go towards buying more benches for our Shield 4 Kids program. Our organization has struggled financially since COVID-19 and we have had a difficult time raising money to get these benches out there for the kids,” he said.
According to Branham, the event offers local businesses a great way to promote their services/products to the public, plus provides community support. All vendors can exhibit except for food-related industries.
“It’s a great way businesses to get out and meet the community, plus the money goes to a great cause,” Branham said. “We are also in need of donations towards providing more benches,” Branham said. “Right now we are running a 2 for 1 special. We are able to offer two benches for the price of one regular bench through our new design. The new bench can be sunk in the ground. This helps us avoid the costs of a lock and chain and theft, which allows us to double our production. Companies will get their logo on the benches.”
Branham explains that the program’s goal is to have all Lehigh bus stops covered by next year.
“We took over the Benches for Our Babes program in North Fort Myers and Cape Coral, since they lost most of their support. If we can get local businesses to help support by making a monthly sponsorship, could get a bench at all the bus stops within a year or two,” Branham said.
The long-term goal is to get local businesses involved and donating to the betterment of the community. Then some of the money raised could go back into the community for long term projects including setting up a community center for kids.”
