VFW Post 4174: Are you ready to lead?

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | May 12, 2021

Are you the type of person who is reliable, have good communication skills, are patient, open minded and willing to learn things as well as teach them? Do you like to run meetings? If so, you might want to consider becoming an officer of your local VFW Auxiliary Chapter.

While leadership can be gratifying, it should be noted that becoming an officer requires a certain dedication. Before volunteering, one should have a mentor to help with setting goals and executing plans. Also, it is important to be certain a person is able to fulfill any duties being asked to accomplish and also to be sure this fits into current and future personal responsibilities. After all, one doesn’t want to plan activities, then try and schedule a vacation at the same time!

The benefits and rewards of leadership are being able to bring fresh ideas to the table, share knowledge, help the Auxiliary grow and be a mentor to others. It’s also a good way to learn more about the Auxiliary and also the VFW and all its workings. Not only that, leaders will also find themselves honing new skills. Remember, it’s never too late to learn something new.

If someone has suggested to you about you becoming an officer, that should be taken as quite a compliment. Perhaps your ideas are something special that will enhance the Auxiliary, or you find yourself loaded with great ideas that might be of interest to others in the organization, especially if the suggestions can further improve the services to veterans.

It is a sad fact that if an Auxiliary has no one ready to fill its leadership roles, it can close. A priority of the Auxiliary cultivating future leaders will be the tool which can prevent losing an Auxiliary, especially since this is such an avoidable reason for it to happen.

Officers’ eligibility information can be found in the Bylaws and Ritual 2021, Sec. 801. Another great resource is the 2020-2021 National Program Book or Building on the VFW Auxiliary Foundation. They can be found at vfwauxiliary.org/resources.

At the VFW Post 4174, elections are coming up soon. Will you be next?
