VFW Post 4174: Make it memorable!

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | May 26, 2021

Monday, May 31, is Memorial Day. In honor of those who have fallen, we fly our flags at half staff until noon in accordance with the rest of the nation. We also find many different ways to acknowledge this day. For some, it is a time to remember a son, daughter, sister, brother or parent who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country. For others, it is an opportunity to show our appreciation to those who are gone, even though we may not have known them. It is also a time to show all our veterans of all our different military branches that we have nothing but the utmost respect for them and what they have done for us.

There are many celebrations scattered around the entire country. Some of the celebrations are very solemn events while others revolve around picnics, days off work and a school holiday. It is important to remember the real reason for the day, which is to honor those who served in the military, especially the ones who failed to return to their homes.

At the Memorial Gardens on Route 82, a service will be conducted with all the pomp the military has performed on many occasions, beginning at 10 a.m. At the conclusion, everyone is invited to the Post 4174 at 25 Homestead Road for a picnic which will include hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, beans, desserts and will be available for the price of a donation. If you have any questions, call the Post at 239-369-5100 where you can get the information you need.

This year, it will be even more of a distinction than in years past, because we are beginning to make a slow recovery from the seclusions of last year. Since we are able to congregate more, it is only fitting that we show up in record numbers to remind everyone that we are, always were and always will be a united nation, in spite of all the trials and travails which may be thrown our way.

We owe it to those who went before us to remember their sacrifice, to honor their lives and to make this a Memorable Memorial Day. We will be glad to welcome you!
