Lehigh Fire to sell limited-edition shirts in annual fundraising effort

By MELISSA BILL - | Aug 18, 2021

The Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District is again selling limited-edition shirts for its annual fundraiser for Pink Heals to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Firefighter Paramedic Sarah Goldstein has organized the fundraiser since 2017, raising almost $20,000 for the Pink Heals organization.

This cause is very close to Goldstein’s heart and was inspired by her mother’s battle with breast cancer. Each year, she designs a new shirt to help make a difference in the lives of others.

“When someone is diagnosed with a serious illness, they need a strong support system to encourage them to keep fighting,” Goldstein said in a prepared statement. “We are here to show our love and support.”

Last year’s fundraiser hit new records, thanks to the involvement of the Iona McGregor Fire District, South Trail Fire District, and even the Atlanta Fire Department. Although the color and front logo on the shirt varied by department, the design on the back was the same and signified support for Pink Heals and cancer warriors.

“We had such great support last year from other fire departments and first responders and a lot of people in the community supported the cause,” said Katie Heck, Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District spokesperson. “This year everyone from each department will get a shirt that they wear with their uniforms throughout October.”

This year’s shirt design features the phrase “Fighting More Than Fire,” signifying support for cancer warriors and their families. The shirts are available online and come in short and long sleeve (soft cotton blend), as well as a long sleeve dri-fit option.

The Pink Heals SWFL Chapter partners with local public safety organizations, businesses, and families to provide home visits to show support and much needed love for the individuals battling their illness.

“The visits show the individuals that they are loved, cherished, and important. Pink Heals runs only by the kindness of supporters and volunteers. The money raised is purely operational. To get fire trucks to the locations to the people battling cancer and their families,” Heck explained.

Goldstein has volunteered with the Southwest Florida Chapter of Pink Heals since 2017, but she still remembers when she received her set of pink bunker gear.

“The first thing I noticed was my mom’s name embroidered on the sleeve of my bunker coat. My mom received her diagnosis on the day that I was sworn in as a career firefighter,” Goldstein said. “Through her continuing battle, I’ve learned that fighting cancer is a family affair. Volunteering for Pink Heals is my way of honoring my mother and also encouraging others to stay strong in their battle. “

The shirts are available online for purchase by the public until Sept. 1. Shirt orders will be available for local pickup at Lehigh Station 104 on Oct. 1 or any day after. All of the proceeds benefit Pink Heals.
