On Sept. 10, members of the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District will join firefighters from across Southwest Florida and have their heads shaved by Golisano Children’s Hospital patients battling cancer. Each year the event becomes an engaging, friendly competition to see who can raise the most funds for the cause.

For Engineer Maury Morejon, this will be his fourth year participating in the event and representing the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District.

“I feel honored to represent the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue district and participate for the fourth year in the 4th Annual Clips for Cancer event,” Engineer Morejon stated in a LAFCRD press release. “To have the opportunity to be part of the overwhelming support this event brings is truly an amazing experience.”

Last year the event was broadcast live over Facebook, and featured an entire day of shaves dedicated just to the Lehigh Acres Fire District participants alone. LAFCRD participants last year included Chief Robert DiLallo, Deputy Chief Naranjo, Assistant Chief Ketron, Lt. Ricciardi, Firefighter Milana and Engineer Morejon.

According to Engineer Morejon, this cause hits close to home.

“I’m a father of two children and I just recently lost an aunt to cancer. I can’t even imagine what these kids and their families are going through, or all the pain, sickness and fear that they may be feeling. I want to do anything I can do to help these kids not feel alone in their journey and bring a smile to their faces, even if it’s for a little bit,” Morejon said. “If something as simple as a haircut can put a smile on their face just for a couple hours, it’s so worth it.”

Clips for Cancer is held annually and designed to support and empower children currently undergoing treatment for cancer and blood disorders at Golisano Children’s Hospital. It helps raise awareness and drive philanthropic support.

Leading up to the event, the Lee Health Foundation will share stories of our local heroes’ cancer journeys as well as why the “Shavees” are having their heads shaved in support of pediatric cancer awareness month and Barbara’s Friends – Golisano Children’s Hospital’s Cancer Fund.

Donations to Barbara’s Friends – Golisano Children’s Hospital Cancer Fund will make a difference in the life of a child with cancer or a blood disorder.

“We are hoping our involvement will support their mission to fund programs, services, equipment, and the best in medical care for the children of our community so no child will have to leave home for treatment,” said Katie Heck, Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District spokesperson.
