Firefighters from the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District had their heads shaved for a good cause earlier this month.
The hair cutting extravaganza was held at Great Clips in Bonita Springs and was to raise funds to help patients at Golisano Children’s Hospital who are battling cancer.
For the fourth year in a row, Firefighter Paramedic Maury Morejon is helping the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District lead the way in raising funds for this honorable cause.
“As a father and having family members experience the devastating effects of cancer, I have felt the need to support Barbara’s Friends the same way it supports these patients and their families. I feel honored to represent the Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District and participate for the fourth year in the 4th Annual Clips for Cancer event. To have the opportunity to be part of the overwhelming support this event brings is truly an amazing experience,” Morejon stated on the fundraisers site.
The Lehigh Fire Control & Rescue District is continuing to help Barbara’s Friends meet its goals this year. To date, LAFCRD has raised $1,075.
“I look forward to participating in this event each year because I get to help raise awareness and funds to support the patients and their families. This year was especially fun, because I was joined in the barber chairs by my brothers and sisters in the fire service. It was fun to join in a friendly fundraising competition to raise money for such a worthy cause,” Morejon said.
According to Amy Frith, Sr. Director, Barbara’s Friends – Children’s Cancer Fund, they are closing in on their fundraising goal.
“This morning we are at $129,740 total for the entire month-long event,” Frith stated. “The firefighter’s shave day is one of four shaving days. “
The final shave was Friday.
Here is a tally as of right now of the fire districts
• Bonita $5,100
• South Trail $2,750
• San Carlos $2,605
• Iona McGregor $1,515
• Lee County Port Authority Rescue and Firefighting $1,175
• Lehigh Acres $1,075

“Total from the fire district’s shaves is $16,195!!! WHOOO HOOO. Lee County supporters and residents can still help support the cause by going to www.justgiving.com/campaign/2021. They can also see all the local participants and see how much has been donated. We still are continuing the fundraising through the month of September,” Firth continued.
During the month of September, the Lee Health Foundation will share stories of local heroes’ cancer journeys as well as why the “Shavees” are having their heads shaved in support of pediatric cancer awareness month and Barbara’s Friends – Golisano Children’s Hospital’s Cancer Fund.
