Five applicants will be brought before the School Board of Lee County this week to be interviewed for the position of superintendent of schools.

Those five applicants are Christopher Bernier, Michael Ramirez, Dr. Randy Mahlerwein, Michael Gaal and Charlie Perry.

Bernier has been the chief of staff for the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada since 2019.

Ramirez has been the deputy superintendent of schools for Denver Public Schools since 2019.

Gaal became the president of sales for Beable Education in Lakewood, New Jersey in 2021.

Perry has been the district superintendent for Hamblen County School District in Morristown, Tenn., since 2017.

Zoom meetings with the candidates were to began Tuesday and continue today, two the first day, and three the second.

Each school board member will appoint two school-based employees, two parents and one community member. Each division of the district also will choose a representative for the search group. These members will be asked to fill out an impression form that asks of each candidates strengths and weaknesses.

Human Resources Executive Director Rob Dodig said the members of the group will review the video tapes of each interview of the candidates to provide their input. The impression forms will go to Ray & Associates to gather the information before provided to the board.

The Board will hold a briefing on Monday, Jan. 24, to narrow the candidate field to three, and will vote on the three finalists at the Action Meeting of Jan. 25. More information about the process for the finalist interviews will shared after the finalists are approved.

The resume and information on each candidate can be found on the District website at: https://www.leeschools.net/leadership/school_board/superintendent_search.

Parents and community members are encouraged to watch the interviews and share any feedback they have through the comment section at the bottom of the Superintendent Search page, district officials said.

The name of the candidate should be included in the subject line to help easily organize the feedback.
