Fire district responds to home fire affecting family of 5

By MELISSA BILL / news@breezenewspapers.com - | Feb 21, 2022

The Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District responded to a home fire call on 5th Street SW last Wednesday.

The blaze impacted five people, including two children.

“Our crews were dispatched to the fire. There were no injuries, and everyone got out safely. The home will be uninhabitable until repairs can be made due to the smoke and the electricity. Our investigators determined the fire started in the downstairs bathroom, and was electrical related,” Katie Heck, Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District spokesperson, said.

Local American Red Cross volunteer members of the Disaster Action Team, from the Florida Gulf Coast to Heartland Chapter, also responded to provide assistance to the family, including emergency financial assistance, health and mental health services, one-on-one support to connect to available recovery assistance and other post-disaster support.

LAFCRD also reports a fairly busy start to the dry season, but maintains some fires are preventable.

“We’ve had a busy start to our dry season, primarily due to the recent hard freezes that killed a lot of brush in the area. We are responding to a lot of preventable fires, brush fires ignited by an improperly disposed cigarette, sparks from ATVs, and recreational fires that spread out of control,” Heck said.
