To the editor:

President Biden will be appointing a justice to the Supreme Court. Just as Ronald Reagan announced he would pick a woman, Biden has announced he will consider only Black female candidates for selection. Thus Biden will be raising the women to male selection ratio of justices 6:<100. The Republican Party has gone apoplectic. Some Senators have announced they will not vote for the Black woman candidate solely because she is a Black woman candidate (which is discrimination based on race, and illegal). Furthermore, the Grand Old Party bemoans the selection as affirmative action (affirmative action is legal, in fact it is the law of the land). So isn't affirmative action precisely how we remedy discriminatory bias? To declare before you know who the candidate will be that you intend to discriminate against her, only because of her gender and race, seems like a move too stupid for the coach selection on a football team in the NFL; let alone the highest court in the land.
