VFW Post 4174: Mums and moms!

By Submitted by Pat Whitehall - | May 2, 2022

Even though our April Showers weren’t enough to bring the May flowers, there is always something blooming in Southwest Florida, and here in Lehigh Acres at the VFW at 25 Homestead Road South, things are continually flourishing. And there is always another “bud” of an idea taking seed in the continual support of our veterans.

Saturday, May 7, is a unique event; it’s when all the ladies don the most delectable derby they own along with their favorite party dress and join in the merriment of watching and cheering for the best horse in the Kentucky Derby. The camaraderie, fun, food and entertainment never stops and the highlight, after the race, of course is when the most awesome Derby baskets are raffled off and the winner gets to take the prize home.

Sunday, May 8, is perhaps one of the most memorable days of the year because it’s the day set aside to honor all mothers everywhere. If they aren’t given flowers and candy, they are certainly taken out for either a delectable breakfast or to a fancy restaurant for a luxurious dinner. Since we have many members who want to spend the day with their moms, the VFW is opting for a special breakfast instead of having to ask the volunteers to work later in the day so they can have more time with celebrating mom.

The month of May also honors all the branches of our military on separate days, the Post is stepping up to assist with a food drive asking for non perishable items to be donated no later than the 7th and dropped off. We are also proud of our newly decorated interior which boasts a much bigger dance floor so all the Astaire aficionados can “cut a rug’ with ease. Our weekends, along with Wednesday nights have continual musical entertainment will also help to keep all the dancers limber.

We will still have our usual events, because we never want to forget our veterans, but the item of which we’re most proud of and concerned with is the Combat Trauma Force Group which we are working hard at getting this very worthy venture to become more populous in the area. For those who have missed the information, the group meets the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. and first responders are also welcome, even if they are not veterans.

For more information, please call 239-369-5100.

With all the events “blooming” during May, we cordially invite you, the public, to join us at any given venture. You will be glad you did!
