VFW: A call to all!
November is a month associated with our Veterans and there are usually several events which are important in helping us remember and thank them for their service. Some Posts and Legions will be handing out poppies, but the actual Poppy Day is Memorial Day, as the poppy is a symbol of the devastation wrought upon many fields in Europe and it is a more fitting time for that tribute.
The poppy is actually classified as a weed due to its tenacious nature and that is why it is considered a fitting symbol of the military. It is a known fact that our military personnel are tough, resilient and courageous. They will serve to the very best of their ability and persevere in spite of all odds.
Another important day for our Veterans is Friday, Nov. 11. It is the day commemorating the end of WW1 and it pays special honors all Military Veterans who have served, regardless of the year or the conflict. To help us honor these very special citizens, a ceremony is being held at Veterans Park, located just south of the VFW Post 4174 on Homestead Road. The program will begin at 11 a.m. with all due pomp and ceremony.
Because of the events of Hurricane Ian, this year, the Boy Scouts will not be participating in the event because they do not have any off days. While the Post will miss their participation, we will still proceed with our program. The ceremony will be held at the grandstand and afterwards, hot dogs and burgers will be served. The program will be scaled down a bit this year, partly because so many people are still trying to recover from the effects of hurricane Ian.
If you haven’t ever attended one of these events, you might consider giving it a try. Many of our Veterans participate and it is a good time to thank them for their service. As a matter of fact, stopping in at the Post any time will always find some veterans, busy with the various charities and events in which they participate. They are always happy to meet people and a thank you in person for their service is always deeply appreciated.
We are making a call to all to join us on Friday, Nov. 11, to help celebrate with our Veterans. You’ll be glad you did!
